It's an exciting time.
The first completed draft of the second Jake Tanner novel has been completed, and is currently with my editor.
The story has been a labour of love.
I began writing the first draft earlier in 2018, while STANDSTILL was in the editing process, and then I sat on it for a while.
And it took me a long time to get back into it.
The reason being: I've always been a bit afraid of this manuscript.
I wanted to make sure it's perfect, so I've spent the past few months listening to The Story Grid podcast learning about the structure of scene and story, and learning how to make the story as sound and tight as possible.
So the majority of my time has been taken up by putting the scene into a massive spreadsheet which tracks and monitors the effectiveness of the scenes.
It's been a mammoth of a task.
But I'm there, and I'm happy with the end result. I think the story has multiple sub-plots and there are both internal and external genres at play.
I just can't wait for the novel to be released.
It's going to be a long process, but it'll get there.
It's the most exciting Jake Tanner story to-date.
I imagine by now you're dying to know what it's about? Well, the short answer: there’s a terrorist attack in The Shard, London’s tallest skyscraper.
The long answer:
Jake — and the rest of the country — are recovering from the atrocities of 01/08, the worst terror attack London had ever seen. His nights are tormented by Moshat Hakim, the man responsible for the attack, and his personal life is suffering as a result. To make things better, Jake and Elizabeth plan a day out to The View From The Shard. It's December, it's cold, and the last thing Jake wants to be up high.
He soon realised the last thing he actually wants is for his friends and family to be held hostage by an estranged bio-terrorist intent on altering the future of humankind forever.
It sounds exciting… and so it should!
What's it going to be called?
I don't know. I'm still working on the title. I think it sounds cheesy to just call it, THE SHARD.
Here are some other titles I've got as potential:
- Shards of Glass
And that's it. I'm really not very good with this whole, “coming up with the title of the story” thing. At all.
So if you've got any suggestions I'd love to hear them.
Perhaps I'll send out a survey to my mailing list asking them come up with some answers.
Until then, if you've never read any of the Jake Tanner series, you can sign up to my mailing list — and get a free short story as part of it — all for free. The book is called THE RED VIPER, and it's also free on all ebook markets.
